Supplemental Post #5: Picture(s) of my dog Akira - Daniela Velazco

The other day I was channel surfing and I came across the most amazing channel: DOGTV. Yes, just like Lifetime is ~television for women~, DOGTV is television for dogs! I genuinely perceived this as a joke (I thought this was an Adult Swim bit) but after a quick google search I saw that it is a real human thing... but for dogs. According to their website, "DOGTV is a 24/7 channel with programs scientifically developed to provide the right company for dogs when left alone. Through years of research by some of the world’s top pet experts, special content was created to meet specific attributes of a dog’s sense of vision and hearing and supports their natural behavior patterns" (https://www.dogtv.com/about/). If I am to understand correctly, humans are meant to leave this television station on for their dogs when they are away. I am not judging. In fact, I find it really sweet. Intense and one of the whitest things I have ever seen, but sweet.

I looked through their website (that kept trying to get me to subscribe to their channel) and explored their content such as  Relaxation programs (that are akin to Norwegian slow tv) and my personal favorite segment: The Dog Chef. While the Lisa Parks reading "Flexible Microcasting" discussed female-centered networks that attempted to attract female consumption on the television and computer screen, DOGTV's demographic caters to a different species altogether. I am curious what the (human) consumer demographic for DOGTV looks like...

I left it on for my dog, Akira (the most amazing beautiful handsomest boy, pictured below), because he can be a bit of a nightmare at night. I wanted to see if there would be any affect on him at all since he doesn't really register technology or screens. The program that was on at the time was a relaxing video about pouring rain. Eager to get my sweet little nightmare to sleep, I left it on in hope that it would calm him down. It did not! He went to the living room instead and grabbed a squeaky toy instead, despite the fact that it was past 10pm! Akira has no regard for time, nor television. If only we could be a little more like him (about time, not tv). At least I know I won't have to fight him for the remote. ... Unless he chews on it.
